We (MJ & Pip) built The Climatics as an experiment in the open - "learning out loud," sharing our thinking as it developed. Showing the "backstage," as it were. This blog is where we did that.
Our aim was for our work to serve the ecosystem of actors already doing incredible climate work, and to help inform best practice philanthropy for climate givers. We built this in the open to invite more people in, and to help get more funds to organisations doing important systems change work.
The experiment worked, because none of us is as smart as all of us.
We spent years working in philanthropy and systems change before starting this. Pip brought deep climate experience to the table, and between us we wanted to make sure that when everyday Kiwis chose to give to climate action, those donations had the biggest possible impact. We took turns writing here, sharing what we were learning along the way, and we loved hearing from our community as we went.
The Climatics closed its doors in September 2026, but this blog stays open. We're still sharing our impact, our learnings, and grantee stories as reporting continues, so there's more to come even though the fundraising rounds have wrapped.
A note on the use of AI: we sometimes used AI to help when we wrote these blogs. All ideas were our own, and where we worked with AI it was mainly to turn internal documents or discussions into a more readable form. As a lean organisation, this assistance meant we could get more of our thinking out into the open, which was all part of our mission.
