Since we[last caught up with All Aboard](https://theclimatics.org/news/more-than-the-car.-the-climatics-check-in-with-all-aboard), they’ve been very busy indeed.

Some of you will recall that All Aboard planned to use their Climatics grant to create a technical report called *Better Moves*. That report is now complete, and we’re checking in with All Aboard Chair Paul Winton and Executive Director Tim Adriaansen hot on the heels of a successful launch that brought together more than 200 people from all walks of life.

*Better Moves* is Aotearoa’s first ever national-scale vision for a better transport future. Led by Tim Adriaansen and supported by a team of transport, climate, health and community experts, it explores how changing the way we get around could cut emissions and leave us with healthier communities in the process.

So what's in the report? *Better Moves* sets out 11 interventions, starting by making better use of the space we already have on our streets and enabling protected cycleways, buses every 10 to 12 minutes, the return of passenger rail, 32,000 km of regional trails, smarter freight and shared electric cars. All Aboard modelled four futures side by side over 50 years. Three lean on swapping petrol cars for EVs, and the fourth pairs fast electrification with changes to the wider transport system.

That fourth option, the Better Moves pathway, comes out well ahead. Compared with a moderate electrification pathway, over 50 years it avoids around 61,000 deaths or serious injuries, delivers roughly $330 billion in health benefits and keeps about 142 million tonnes of climate pollution out of the sky. Traffic drops 14% even as our population grows 48%, and once the programme is paid for, New Zealanders come out $111 billion ahead.

The report is grounded in the everyday reality of so many New Zealanders. It calls car ownership a "forced subscription" because, for many households, owning a car is the only way to take part in everyday life. And like any subscription, it comes with a recurring bill for buying, insuring, maintaining, parking and powering it. When walking, cycling and public transport are good options, owning a car becomes a choice, and one shared car can replace around 9 to 13 privately owned ones. All up, the report estimates New Zealanders would spend around $447 billion less on vehicles over 50 years. With the cost of living biting, that's a big deal for households. As one of our favourite lines in the report puts it, “Nobody is coming for your car.” The aim is a country where fewer of us need one.

The report opens with a foreword from Dr Huhana Hickey, who calls for a tikanga transition, judged on whether people and the environment end up better cared for. Accessibility runs through the whole report, with a clear message that designing for disabled people means designing for everyone. You can[read the full report here](https://allaboard.nz/better-moves).

## Launch night

*Better Moves* launched on 30 September at the Maritime Room in Auckland, and the crowd was a festival lineup in its own right. Every age group, and people from right across the country, all in one room to hear about a better transport future for Aotearoa.

It was great to see such a wide mix of people in the room, because a transport vision only works if it speaks to everyone who’ll use it day to day, whether they’re walking, cycling or catching the bus.

MJ sat next to a woman at the launch who had no skin in the game when it comes to transport work professionally. Yet she'd chosen the suburb she lives in because of its public transport options. For her, like so many New Zealanders, the way we get around shapes everyday life, from where we choose to live to how much it costs us.

## The reviews are in

Positive feedback has come from people who know the transport system from the inside, including former colleagues from the ministry, councils and regional government.

The praise kept rolling in from further afield too. Prominent public figures, climate scientists and politicians have all acknowledged the work, which is about as close to a five-star review as a technical report gets.

Better Moves now gives the sector a strong evidence base to build from, and the work behind it has built valuable collaborative networks.

## Funding the tour

All Aboard has the tour route mapped out. The plan is to take Better Moves out of the report and into communities, with three big pillars:

- Face-to-face workshops up and down the country
- Town halls in communities around Aotearoa
- A digital resource platform that anyone can use

The funding landscape is tough right now, and All Aboard have been frank with us about where they stand. There's nothing left in the budget. To keep the lights on and keep the team funded, they need to raise a minimum of $100,000 a year.

Funding like this goes further when it’s committed over several years. Multi-year grants give organisations the security to plan ahead with confidence, and at The Climatics we see this type of funding as best practice. It’s part of a wider approach we believe in, known as trust-based philanthropy. That means giving unrestricted funding with flexible reporting, and trusting grantees to know what their communities need, because they’re the ones closest to them. We explored how multi-year funding could work through The Climatics, but our model couldn't stretch that way. All Aboards work on transport is important, and we'd love to see others backing them, adding to the momentum Better Moves has already built. If you're a funder who’s interested, please get in touch with Paul and Tim to hear more about their vision.

## Let's back this band

The Climatics' grant helped get *Better Moves* written. What came out the other side is a national vision, and a growing network of people ready to make it real. Transport is one of our biggest sources of emissions, and we think a clear, people-powered plan for changing it is work worth backing. Flick to the acknowledgements in the report and you'll see thanks given to The Climatics and our collective giving community who made the project possible. That's you, our legendary partners in clime.

The next stage is about getting this plan out into communities. If you'd like to help All Aboard hit the road, you can find out how to support them[here](https://allaboard.nz/take-action?frequency=month). And [here’s](https://allaboard.nz/better-moves) another link to the report - well worth a read.
